FIFA Word Cup Roundup

By Ricole L Powell

The 21st FIFA World Cup 2018, in Russia, has finally began after 4 years of waiting. Beginning with the preliminary matches in Group A through Group H, the first week has been full of surprises. The Cup kicked off it’s first match with Saudi Arabia and Russia, where Russia did not let down it’s country, winning their first game with a staggering 5-0.

The games that followed were:

Egypt 0-1 Uruguay

Morocco 0-1 Iran

Portugal 3-3 Spain

France 2-1 Austrailia

Peru 0-1 Denmark

Argentina 1-1 Iceland

Croatia 2-0 Nigeria

Costa Rica 0-1 Serbia

Brazil 1-1 Switzerland

Gemany 0-1 Mexico

Sweden 1-0 Korea Republic

Portugal vs Spain was one of the most anticipated matches in the preliminary rounds, and had several twists throughout. Some of the highlights of this match was when Diego Costa scored two of three goals for Spain and, Cristiano Ronaldo scored all three goals for his team, Portugal, making him the top scorer in the Cup thus far.

Germany vs Mexico was also a game no one expected the defending champions, to be defeated. Germany.

Brazil and Argentina both tied in their own matches. This came as a disappointment to many, given that they have two of the best players in the world, Lionel Messi and Neymar Jr. However, major credit should go to both Iceland’s and Switzerland’s defenses throughout the matches.

FIFA World Cup 2018 seems to be one for the underdogs, this far. We will continue to keep you updated on the games to come.
