The relationship between Jeannie Mai and her mother ‘Mama Mai,’ has not always been peaches and cream. In a video for her Youtube series, ‘ Hello Hunnay With Jeannie Mai’ which was first released to PEOPLE, ‘The Real’ talk show co-host confessed that she was sexually abused.

Jeannie revealed that she was sexually abused by an unnamed family member when she was 9 years old. She explains that the relative was responsible for babysitting her after school one day and that’s when the incident occurred.

“I just remember one day this person sitting very close to me, we were playing video games, and he started to touch my thigh,”

Jeannie shared.

“I was also just stunned because I had never been intimately touched like that so I couldn’t tell if it was wrong, I just knew I was noticing it. I was almost narrating it in my head.”

At the beginning, Jeannie’s mother did not believe her, causing them to drift apart. Jeannie reportedly held the grudge against her mum for 8 years, leaving home at 16 and not resolving the issue with her mum until 24.

“We’ve talked before that we had a major falling out when I was about 16 until I was 24. I’ve never actually talked about that incident with my mom since then,”

she explained in the latest episode.

“We’re talking for the first time about how that affected us.”

When her daughter left home, ‘Mama Mai’ took it upon herself to confront the abuser who pleaded with her not to pursue any legal action.

That was the turning point in the Mai ladies’ relationship as Jeannie said that all she wanted was for her mother to believe her. She was yearning for the support from her mother as any abused person would.

“…I feel like you set something free in me because you believed me.”
