Disney has finally revealed who will be playing “Ariel,” in the live action remake of the 1989 animated hit movie, “The Little Mermaid.” R&B singer, Halle Bailey, of the group Chloe X Halle has been selected to play the red haired princess.
Film director, Rob Marshall has spent the past couple months auditioning persons for the role although we have learnt that Halle has been the early front runner.
“After an extensive search, it was abundantly clear that Halle possesses that rare combination of spirit, heart, youth, innocence, and substance — plus a glorious singing voice — all intrinsic qualities necessary to play this iconic role,” Marshall revealed.
Of course, Halle’s selection came with an outpouring of love from fellow celebrities and fans but it was also received with some backlash. Stars such as Zendaya and Halle Berry took to social media to congratulate the star and express their approval. Many persons are disagreeing with the casting of a black girl being chosen as Ariel and there is even a ‘hashtag’ on Twitter #notmyariel.
You may or may not know that Halle and her sister rose to popularity by covering some of Beyonce’s song on YouTube before they were actually discovered by their idol and introduced to her record label. The pair even made appearances in Beyoncé’s 2016 visual album Lemonade and opened for the singer for portions of her Formation and On the Run II tours. They’ve also performed during high-profile events like the 2019 Super Bowl and Grammys, where they were also nominated for Best New Artist.

The 19 year old is also not new to acting as she first appeared alongside Queen Latifah in the 2006 film ‘The Last Holiday.’ She also stars alongside her sister on the freeform comedy ‘Grown-ish.’
Despite the controversy, we are excited that the new generation of Disney fans will be able to enjoy the remake of such an iconic film together with us.
