For the many years that Serena has played in this tournament, she has always been a favourite to win but in recent years, her opponents have become more fierce, oftentimes edging her out in the finals.

The 2019 Wimbledon women’s singles finals was no different. A highly anticipated match it was, as a win would see Williams tying with Margaret Courts’ record 24 Grand Slam titles. Halep had other plans and she played what many are calling a near perfect match. This is the third time since returning to the court that Serena has been denied attaining her 24th major title.

In her first season back, after giving birth to daughter Alexis Olympia, she lost in the Wimbledon final to Angelina Kerber and in the U.S. Open final to Naomi Osaka. The loss to Osaka was particularly traumatic as she found herself in trouble with the chair umpire Carlos Ramos for a series of code-of-conduct violations. Osaka, who ended up in tears during the award ceremony had won her first Grand Slam title, much like Halep.

Have you ever played a better match?” asks Sue Barker.

“Never,” replies Halep, still clutching the trophy. “It was the best match. I have worked a lot for this moment. It’s an honour to play in front of the Royal Box. I don’t have the words to explain.

“I had nerves. My stomach was not well before the match, but I came on court and gave my best. It’s something special and I’ll never forget this day. It’s my mum’s dream. When I was 10, 12 years old, she said I had to play the final of Wimbledon.”

“I have worked a lot to change my game, to be able to win matches on grass. It was an amazing tournament and I can’t wait to come back. It’s been an honour.”

Serena congratulated Halep and said,

“She literally played out of her mind.”

Williams will continue to seek her 24th title as she goes to the U.S. Open next month.

Congratulations Simona Halep 🎾
