WHAT DO I LOVE ABOUT LONDON?

London is my favorite city in the UK, particularly  the summertime. During the year, it rains frequently, and the skies are grey. However, by mid-June to late August, it is  one of the most exciting places to be.

Here are some of the things I love about London:

Borough Market
  • Perhaps my favorite thing is that the city is a melting pot of people from different cultures who migrate to the UK and bring their cultures with them. This fusion of cultures is what I call London.  London does not have its own style or cuisine. After all, “Fish and Chips” is not a cuisine! However, some of the best Indian, Japanese, Thai, Vietnamese, and Jamaican food I have ever tasted reside in London. You can find every type of restaurant representing a myriad of cultures. They line the streets of the different boroughs.

  • I love how we can be walking down Kensington High Street or Oxford Street and run into old friends from high school in a totally different country or a long-lost  relative you have not seen in years. It happens every time. For such a big city it can be quite small in this regard.
  • I love the fact that London and England, on a whole, offer an immediate sense of community unlike cities like Miami and Atlanta in the USA . Of course, the neighborhood pub and the corner store or “Going Shops,” as the Brits call  it, are at the center of networking and bonding. The people of the Caribbean, India, and Africa definitely inherited their community models from the British.

  • London is steeped in tradition. Where else would you find the iconic red phone booth and the signature black cab? It is mind-blowing that the architecture never changes on the outside of the buildings, but the interior designs are usually very contemporary.  On the flip side, I don’t like how exact the British architects are about square footage. What they lack in space they compensate for with design.
  • I love the London fashion scene. London is the original capital of street fashion. The streets of London can be a blank canvas for any fashion designer.  It was the first place I saw a woman rocking her sneakers with a dress before that became a fashion statement around the world.

This international capital in Europe is the home of the British royalty who have captured our hearts and brainwashed us into believing that Britain must have a monarchy to survive. It is all a part of the seductive charm of this city. As traditional as it appears, London has not aged a day. It somehow manages to keep the old young, and I am absolutely smitten by this idea.
