Stop Confusing Access With Closeness

Hey Friends ❤️

Here is your Daily Power Note From Basia.

A woman with long, curly hair sitting on a couch, holding a black mug with 'Just Basia' written on it. She is wearing a light-colored blouse and gold jewelry, smiling at the camera. In the foreground, there are stacked books titled 'BOUNDARIES', 'HEALTHY RELATIONSHIPS', and 'A BRIGHTER YOU'. The background has a red wall and plants.

It took me a long time to understand that access and closeness are not the same thing.

For years, I gave the wrong people access to my life because I confused frequent communication with genuine connection.

We talked often.

They knew what was happening in my life.

They knew my plans, my problems, my dreams, and sometimes even my fears.

So naturally, I assumed we were close.

But I eventually learned:

Just because someone has access to you does not mean they are close to you.

Someone can call you every day and still not truly know you.

Someone can spend a lot of time around you and still not respect you.

Someone can know intimate details about your life and still not be emotionally safe.

Someone can have your phone number, sit at your table, follow you on social media, and know your business—and still not deserve unrestricted access to your heart.

That lesson changed me.

Because genuine closeness requires more than communication.

It requires trust.

It requires respect.

It requires honesty.

It requires reciprocity.

And most importantly, it requires emotional safety.

Can you tell this person the truth without worrying that it will later be used against you?

Can you celebrate your success without feeling that you need to make yourself smaller?

Can you disagree without being punished?

Can you set a boundary without the entire relationship falling apart?

Can you be vulnerable without becoming somebody’s gossip?

Can you be yourself without constantly managing their emotions?

Those are better measurements of closeness.

I have learned that everybody does not need front-row access to my life.

Some people belong in the balcony.

Some belong in the lobby.

And some people need to remain outside the building altogether.

Access should be earned.

Not because we need to become suspicious of everyone, but because we should become more intentional about who receives the most intimate parts of us.

Your dreams deserve protection.

Your peace deserves protection.

Your vulnerabilities deserve protection.

Your next move does not need to be announced to everybody.

And every person who asks, “What’s going on with you?” does not automatically deserve the full answer.

Sometimes we overshare because we want connection.

But sharing more information does not necessarily create more intimacy.

Healthy intimacy develops over time through consistency.

Through trust.

Through someone showing you repeatedly that they can handle your truth with care.

I wish I had understood this sooner.

I gave people access because I was loving.

Open.

Available.

And willing to believe the best in people.

I do not regret having a good heart.

But wisdom has taught me that a good heart still needs good boundaries.

Today, I am much more intentional about access.

I can love you without telling you everything.

I can care about you without inviting you into every room of my life.

I can wish you well without giving you a front-row seat to my future.

And so can you.

TODAY’S POWER MOVE

Take a moment and think about the people who currently have the most access to your life.

Then ask yourself:

“Has their access been earned through trust, respect, honesty, and emotional safety—or did I simply become accustomed to having them around?”

You do not need to dramatically remove everyone from your life.

But you may need to adjust their level of access.

Maybe someone needs less information.

Maybe someone needs a stronger boundary.

Maybe someone needs to move from your inner circle to your outer circle.

And maybe someone has consistently proven that they deserve to be closer.

TODAY’S POWER LINE

Stop confusing access with closeness. Being present in your life is not the same as being safe for your life.

Choose your inner circle carefully.

Everybody can know you.

But everybody does not need to know everything about you.

With love,

Basia ❤️

P.S. Protecting access to your life is not secrecy. Sometimes it is simply wisdom.
