Being Needed Is Not the Same as Being Valued

Hey Friends ❤️

Here is your Daily Power Note From Basia.

Some relationships make us feel important because we are constantly needed.

We are the fixer.

The giver.

The problem-solver.

The one who shows up.

The one who pays.

The one who carries the emotional load.

The one who makes everything easier for everyone else.

And because people rely on us, we assume that means they value us.

But I have learned that being needed and being valued are not the same thing.

Sometimes people become attached to what you do for them.

Not necessarily to who you are.

They love your availability.

Your generosity.

Your resources.

Your advice.

Your willingness to rescue.

Your ability to hold everything together.

But the real question is:

Would the relationship still feel the same if you stopped performing that role?

Would they still call if you were not solving a problem?

Would they still make time for you if you were not giving something?

Would they still respect you if you said no?

Would they still care about your feelings if you were not carrying theirs?

Would they still choose you if you were not useful to them?

Those questions matter.

Because a healthy relationship should have room for your whole identity.

Not just the parts that are convenient for other people.

You should be able to be tired.

Unavailable.

Unsure.

In need of support yourself.

You should be allowed to receive.

You should be allowed to have boundaries.

You should be allowed to exist without constantly proving your value through sacrifice.

Real value says:

“I appreciate you even when you are not doing anything for me.”

Real closeness says:

“I want to know how you are, not just what you can do.”

Real love does not disappear the moment you stop overfunctioning.

And if a relationship begins to fall apart as soon as you stop rescuing, overgiving, or carrying everything, that may reveal something important.

It may have been built around your usefulness.

Not your wholeness.

That can be painful to admit.

Especially if being needed has become part of how you see yourself.

Sometimes we overgive because it makes us feel secure.

If people need us, maybe they will not leave us.

If we solve enough problems, maybe we will always have a place.

But you should never have to earn belonging by exhausting yourself.

You deserve relationships where you are valued for your presence.

Your humor.

Your heart.

Your wisdom.

Your honesty.

Your personality.

Your humanity.

Not simply for what you provide.

TODAY’S POWER MOVE

Think about one relationship where you feel most needed.

Then ask yourself:

“Do I also feel valued?”

Notice the difference.

Ask:

“What happens when I say no?”

“Do they check on me when I have nothing to offer?”

“Can I receive as comfortably as I give?”

Then choose one small way to stop overfunctioning.

Let someone else solve the problem.

Do not immediately volunteer.

Allow yourself to receive.

Give the relationship space to show you what is really there.

TODAY’S POWER LINE

Being needed is not the same as being valued. The right people will appreciate who you are, not only what you do for them.

You are more than your usefulness.

You are more than what you provide.

You deserve to be loved as a whole person.

P.S. A relationship that only works when you are overgiving may not be asking for more love. It may be asking for better boundaries.
