As the saying goes, “Your health is your wealth.” It is also a common feeling that it is costly to eat well. By, well, I mean healthy. I am not sure I agree with the assumption that eating well costs a ton load of money. Eating well can be affordable with proper planning.
Here are some key pointers in achieving an affordable healthy food budget:
- Proper food planning and prepping. If you are able to plan your menus ahead of time, this will save you a lot of money. You will only buy the ingredients you need, and that will avoid wastage.
- Food sourcing is important. Where you purchase your food is crucial. Buying fruits and vegetables in your local marketplace or growing sesoning herbs, vegetables, and fruits in your kitchen garden can significantly reduce your food budget.
- Recycle your ingredients. Pastas and rice can make multiple dishes in a given week. Left over rice can make fried rice the following day. Left over pasta can make a casserole, Mac n Cheese or someother dish.
- Canned Meats and Fish. Whether you are a meat lover or a pescatarian, you can save quite a bit of money purchasing chicken, sausages, and fish in the can. The shelf life is longer, and the product is more affordable. I would advise you to check the expiration dates and sodium content of these products prior to purchase. Otherwise, canned salman, tuna, and sardines are great food options.
- Loyalty programs and discount coupons. I love a great bargain. I am also a hug fan of groery loyalty programs. Membership is free with the exception of places like Costco,Sam’s Club, and Pricemart. You can save a lot of money by joining membership programs with your local supermarket.
I will conclude by saying that it is quite achievable to eat well on a budget. However, it requires proper planning. Since the pandemic, global food prices have escalated. However, with key changes in food sourcing, it is attainable.
